Lascaux Caves

Chasm of Proumeyssac

The largest developed cave in the Périgord and a source of legends since the 18th century. Impressive limestone formations highlighted by sound and light; the visit takes about 45 minutes, on foot or by gondola.

The most beautiful villages in France

La Roque-Gageac

One of France’s most beautiful villages, in a stunning position on the north bank of the Dordogne, backed by a steep cliff. Little seems to have changed in 300 years.

Domme

Arguably the best view over the Dordogne valley of any village. There is a little tourist train (a hit with children) and a cave system right beneath the main square.

Beynac-et-Cazenac

This pretty village climbs from the river up to the castle above. Narrow lanes wind between traditional white and yellow stone houses — at its best at sunrise.

Sarlat-la-Canéda

25 min

The most famous town in the region and one of the most attractive. Book a guided tour at the tourist office. And if you like markets: Sarlat’s is a kilometre long.

Rocamadour

Just across the border in the Lot: a Grand Site de France, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and voted the French people’s favourite village in 2016.

Bouzic night market — within walking distance

Every Tuesday in July and August, Bouzic hosts one of the best night markets in the Dordogne. Just turn up, grab a table and wander the stalls choosing your starter, main course and dessert. Plates and cutlery are provided, and other stalls sell wine.
